Planting the Wildflower Meadow
The sowing of the wildflower meadow was completed during March 19th, 20th and 27th and April 2nd, 3rd and 5th, 2008, under the management of Sandra Parry of the FDP and the BTCV (British Trust for Conservation Volunteers), along with the help of other FDP members and some very helpful local community volunteers of all ages. The project was funded by the Breathing Spaces grant which paid for the seeding of the whole area and the planting of some 8000 plug plants, including species such as Cowslip, Birdsfoot Trefoil and Meadow Buttercup. Refreshments were provided and great fun had by all! One happy local volunteer said:
"I enjoyed meeting new people with the same interests as me and love the sense of achieving something for the future of the park". Another volunteer said that the least enjoyable part of the project was "those things we have no control over- the weather!!"

The new flower meadow will not of course flourish overnight, but with the correct mowing regime and time, we are sure that we shall have a wildflower meadow to be proud of!

The FDP would like to extend a big thank you to all those who helped with this project - your hard work and time was very much apprecaited! See below for some pictures of the project....

There is now a pool of 30 volnteer gardeners (some of whom are working towards an NVQ), working diligently to restore the Memorial Garden and the Rose Garden . They will soon be beginning work on the Azalea Bed also. I think we can all agree that these areas are looking much improved, so please take a stroll to these areas and have a look yourself. To the right is a map of the park, showing the areas where the gardener's have been working - just click on it to enlarge (you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open this file: click HERE to download it) and below is an overview of the project. If you fancy becoming a volunteer gardener for the FDP, just go to the Volunteer page and register your details.
